I recently virtually met children's book author and children's ministry teacher Dennis Crumrin. He and his wife have served in children's church for over 25 years. When asked about his top teaching tips for children's ministry teachers, he shared this.
How do we teach the Word of God?
by Dennis Crumrin
1. Children are very smart and have good memories but they cannot retain as
much as adults can.
We must teach on their level.
Example:
Adults like steak and we can chew and eat large pieces at once. A child can't eat
it in big pieces. He must have his cut into smaller bites. This is the way that we
must teach the Word. We must not water it down but just teach it in smaller
pieces.
2. Children must be taught with repetition as well as adults. Use theme teaching.
Take one basic scripture and repeat it over and over in different ways
Examples:
Bible story telling – Characters in the Bible
Story telling – Characters in our time
Puppets
Characters – in costume
Memory Verse Contests
Games
3. They must hear it, understand it, retain it, and apply it to their lives.
(Matthew 13:23)
23 But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word,
and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an
hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.
